Report on Jewellery Industry and IIGJ-Jaipur Visit
On January 24th, 2025, the IISU Economics Society, Jaipur organized an insightful and enriching industry visit to two prominent players in the jewellery manufacturing sector, namely Gem Worth and Soni International Manufacturing Company at Sitapura Industrial Area, Jaipur. The visit was attended by 24 students, who were given the opportunity to explore the intricate processes involved in jewellery making and to better understand the dynamics of this thriving industry.
The day commenced with an informative session at Gem Worth, where students were introduced to the various stages of jewellery production, from conceptualization to the final product. The first phase of the process was design, where skilled artisans and designers craft detailed sketches or digital renderings based on client requirements or market trends. Once the design is finalized, it moves to the next stage of mould creation, where wax models of the jewellery are produced using high-precision techniques.
The second stage involves the casting process, where the wax models are heated, and molten metal, typically gold, silver, or platinum, is poured into the mould. After the metal cools and hardens, the mould is removed, and the rough jewellery pieces are revealed. These pieces undergo detailed refining, during which artisans meticulously file, polish, and smooth the surface to ensure a flawless finish.
Following the refinement process, the jewellery undergoes stone setting. This crucial stage involves embedding gemstones into the metal, with careful precision to enhance the visual appeal and value of the jewellery. Depending on the design, this could involve a variety of techniques, such as prong, bezel, or pave setting.
Finally, the jewellery undergoes rigorous quality control checks to ensure that it meets the highest standards in terms of durability, finish, and design integrity. The pieces are then ready for packaging and distribution, whether for retail or to be sold directly to customers.
The visit continued with a tour of Soni International Manufacturing Company, where the students observed a large-scale production process. Here, they learned about the use of modern technology and machinery in the mass production of jewellery. The integration of automation with traditional craftsmanship was highlighted, showcasing how efficiency and precision are achieved in the manufacturing process.
In conclusion, the visit provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of the jewellery industry, offering a detailed view of both the artistic and technical aspects involved in jewellery making. It also highlighted the importance of innovation, design, and quality control in maintaining the high standards and global competitiveness of jewellery manufacturers. The event was a valuable educational experience, providing students with practical insights into the industry.
The students also visited the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery Jaipur, renowned for its four-year design course. During their visit, they had the opportunity to view the innovative creations of IIGJ students, showcasing their jewelry designs. They also observed the intricate process of gem cutting. The jewelry on display featured a stunning array of precious and semi-precious stones, including diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, amethysts, topaz, garnets, and citrine. This experience provided the students with valuable insights into both the artistic and technical
aspects of jewelry design and craftsmanship.
